Microsoft rolls out Xbox 360 USB update
Bring your own content storage

Microsoft has begun pushing the latest Xbox 360 firmware update, allowing upgraded consoles to use any connected USB Mass Storage devices.

Up to 16GB of any connected drive can be assigned for the Xbox to use and allocating the storage to the console won't zap data already on the drive provided there's sufficient free space for the Xbox partition.

Xbox Live users will have to apply the update whether they want this feature or not - the new software is a mandatory installation, Microsoft said. ®

I wonder.... 1TB External divided into 3 partitions. two partitions 16 gigs each and the 3rd one with the rest of the memory. you think that would work?

It might do. I think you would have to set the 16gb partition as hda1.

I'm glad they dropped the proprietary BS for the USB memory. Now if only they would do the same for the hard drive.

They won't with the hdd. They make way to much cash on them.

I just wonder why they have to make all the updates mandatory.  I don't have a problem with it, it just sounds less than friendly.

Because it keeps everyone online on a level playing field. Everyone should have the latest version.

I suppose I could always use a USB hard drive if I really wanted to...
